Does Your Website Run On WordPress? How To Tell

Does your website run on WordPress? Here are some tell-tale signs that a website was built with WordPress …

Learn To Use WordPressIt used to be that blogs looked like blogs and websites looked like websites. One could easily tell the two apart.

Then the WordPress CMS came along and everything changed. Now, it’s getting more and more difficult to tell the difference between blogs and websites. Not so much in terms of what the sites are being used for, but in terms of website design and also being able to tell what’s “under the hood”.

Is My Website Built Using WordPress? Tell-Tale Signs & WordPress-Checking Tools

(It’s Getting Harder To Tell Websites Built With Web Development Tools Vs ‘Blogging’ Software!)

For website owners, understanding the difference between a CMS application like WordPress and other website-building software is huge, not so much in terms of the technical differences, but more importantly, in terms of the areas that matter to most website owners, such as web development costs, ease of use, ability to maintain the website up-to-date, managing web content, etc.

Think about this …

Which of the following options would you choose?

A) An eye-catching, professional-looking website that is expensive to build, or

B) The same eye-catching, professional-looking website, but at a much cheaper price than the cost of getting option ”A” built.

If you chose site ”B” above, then you need to learn more about the benefits of using WordPress, why WordPress can be used to create an attractive, professional-looking and fully functional website that will probably cost far less to build than websites built using web-building software … and how to tell these apart!

WordPress is the world’s most used online publishing platform and content management system (CMS). It is a budget-friendly CMS platform suitable for small, medium and even large businesses.

Whether your reason for having a digital presence is for personal blogging or business use, WordPress is easy enough for a newbie with no web design skills to use, and offers many helpful add-ons that make your website more effective in terms of getting your content published, promoting visitor engagement, generating business leads and sales, scalability, etc.

With almost one in every five websites around the world currently being powered by WordPress, chances are that if you already own a website, yours is also a WordPress site.

And if you don’t have a website yet, or are considering getting one built, then wouldn’t it be great to show your web developer an existing site with the design and layout that you like, know that it was built with WordPress and that you can, therefore, get something similarly built for a much smaller cost?

Is My Website WordPress?

Do you need to know if a website uses WordPress? Maybe you’ve come here because you’ve read about all of the great benefits and advantages of using WordPress, and you’re now wondering if your site runs on WordPress, or some other CMS application.

Also, have you ever looked at a competitor’s website and wondered what they’re doing to try and get better results online?

Knowing if your competitor’s site is built with WordPress can tell you a few things about their strategies and methods, such as what themes or plugins they are using.

Here are some simple methods you can use to quickly tell if a website is powered by WordPress:

Check The Source Code

If you know how to bring up the source code of a web page (e.g. Firefox Menu > Web Developer > Page Source if using Firefox, or Google Menu > More Tools > View Source if using Google Chrome), you can look for an obvious telltale footprint that the site was built with WordPress …

Note: If you cannot find “wp-content” within the source code, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s not a WordPress site.

There are other ways to find out if a site was built using the WordPress software, as we will soon be discussing.

As the point of this article is to try and help non “techies”, however, below you will find a number of easier ways to check if your web site is built using WordPress other than searching the source code.

Just Ask Your Website Developer

While this may seem like the logical thing to do, many website development companies, for whatever reason, may build clients a website and not tell them it’s WordPress.

If you have an existing web site and you can’t tell what CMS application is driving it, just ask your developer or whoever built your web site if the website has been built using WordPress.

That was simple, huh?

Okay … what if you can’t reach your website developer, or what if you’ve come across a website that you really like while surfing the net late at night and need to know if it was built using WordPress?

Check Below The Footer

If the site uses a WordPress theme where the theme templates have not been modified, you can often find a “Proudly powered by WordPress” notice displayed below the footer area …
