Simple Staff List is a free plugin that lets you display information to visitors about your staff members on your website.

The first step is to install and activate the Simple Staff List plugin.

Log into the dashboard and in your admin menu section, choose Plugins > Add New

In the Plugins area, search for “simple staff plugin”. This will bring up the Simple Staff Plugin in your plugin search results.

After the plugin has been installed and activated, a new menu entry will appear on your main WordPress menu section called Staff Members

All of the options and settings for the Simple Staff List plugin are configured and managed in this menu.

Configuring Simple Staff List

Depending on how many people are in your business and how you want to structure your employee directory, you could begin to add new staff member details after installing the plugin, or create several groups (i.e. categories) to assign your individualstaff into.

Create new groups by typing in the following information:

  1. Group Name – Enter your group name here
  2. Slug – Type in the URL-friendly version of your group name. Note: make sure that all letters are in lower case and use hyphens instead of spaces.
  3. Parent – Use this section to set up a directory hierarchy
  4. Description – Enter a group description
  5. Click the Add New Group button when done to create the new category …

If you run a medium to large organization, the ability to assign people to different categories can be very useful. For example, you can create a group for founders, developers, departments, etc.

Create as many categories and nested groups as you want by adding new Groups and then using the Parent drop-down menu to assign these to a hierarchical structure …

After you are done setting up your groups, you can start to add your people to your directory.

This screen provides an easy-to-use interface for adding and editing your staff member information and includes the following fields:

Name Section (1)

  • Name: Enter your staff member’s name
  • Slug: You can change the slug for each employee if you want (this section appears after saving your details).

  • Photo: Add a photo in this section

Staff Member Info Section (3)

  • Position: Type in the employee’s position
  • Email: Your employee’s email address
  • Phone Number: The employee’s phone number
  • Facebook URL: Type in the person’s Facebook URL here (note: use the full URL, e.g. http://www.facebook.com/username)
  • Twitter URL: Enter the person’s Twitter username (note: only enter the username, not the full twitter URL)

  • Staff Member Bio: Add a profile description for your staff member here. This uses the WordPress Text Editor, so you can use HTML into this section.

  • Groups: You can assign your staff member to a specific group (see above to learn how to set up your groups).

Once you are done inputting each of you staff member’s details, assign the new entry to a directory group in the Groups box located in the sidebar …

Note: If you did not set up categories before adding staff member details, you can add a new group in this screen by selecting Groups > + Add New Group

A field will display allowing you to enter a new group name, with a drop-down menu to assign your new entry to a parent group. Type in the name of your new directory category and click on the Add New Group button …

Note: You cannot edit groups when adding or making changes to a staff member’s details. To edit a group entry, go to the Groups section of the plugin’s settings (see “Groups” section above for details).

If you need to make changes to an individual’s details, hover your mouse over their name, and a submenu will appear.

Click on Edit to modify the item’s Staff Bio, or Quick Edit to change details like name, slug, group, and publish status. You can also remove a listing from your directory by clicking on the Trash link, or view the entry on your site by clicking on View

As well as being able to customize your listing templates, the Simple Staff List plugin allows you to display your listings differently using modified shortcodes.

This screen provides a list of all different shortcode variations allowed by the Simple Staff List plugin.

For example, a useful variation you can select to display only members belonging a specific group is the shortcode [simple-staff-list group=”group name”], (e.g.:[simple-staff-list group=”partners”])

You can also display listings in ascending or descending order by using the shortcode [simple-staff-list order=”DESC”] (descending).
