As we’ve discussed in previous posts, by default, WordPress treats your site as a ‘blog’ and shows your most recent post entries on the main page, unless you set a specific page as a home page.
In a previous tutorial, we also explain how to create a WordPress blog page to show your latest published entries.
Whether you choose to make blog post entries on your home page or your blog page, With WordPress you can set a specific number of published blog post entries to appear on these pages (i.e. ‘1’, ’7’, ’12’ etc.)
Your site will then display blog post entries on your blog page up to the maximum number of blog posts you have specified, even if your website contains more posts than the number of items you have set to display …
Being able to set how many post items display on your blog page can be useful.
For example, you can display only the latest blog post item that you have published. This can be handy for example, if you want to promote a weekly special, a ‘deal of the day’ type of offer, publish the latest results of a local sports competition, post upcoming events, set up a monthly team page for announcements, etc.
Or, you can use this great feature to fill an ugly space on your blog if your sidebar menu is too long …
Whatever the reason, WordPress gives you the flexibility to change the number of blog posts that you want to show on your blog page.
Let’s show you, then, how easy it is to change how many blog posts you want to show up on your site’s blog page.
Changing The Number Of Blog Post Entries Displayed On Your Blog
Through its content management system (CMS), WordPress allows you to specify how many published blog post entries you want to display on your site’s blog page.
How many entries you want to display is entirely up to you. WordPress doesn’t limit this amount …
Note: Pick a sensible setting that won’t slow down your page as the entries load on your site. You can always raise or lower the number of items displayed on your blog page.
To specify how many published posts you want to have displaying on your blog page website, choose Settings > Reading from your WP dashboard menu …
Configure your options in the Reading Settings screen as per the screenshot below:
Specifying The Number Of Posts On The Front Page
If you are using your WordPress site as a blog (i.e. the default installation option), where the home page shows your newest posts, then set your options as described below:
- Front page displays: Set this to Your latest posts
- Blog pages show at most: X posts (where ‘X’ is the number of blog post items that you want showing – e.g. ‘1’, ’5’, ’10’, ’12’ etc.)
- Click the ‘Save’ button when finished…
To Specify The Number Of Posts Showing On The Blog Page
If you are using your site as a website, where the main page displays a fixed page and your newest blog posts show up on a separate blog page, then edit your settings as shown below:
- Front page displays: Set this to A static page, then select Posts page: > your Blog Page from the drop down menu
- Blog pages show at most: X posts X posts (where ‘X’ is the number of items you want to show – i.e. ‘1’, ‘3’, ‘7’, ’12’ etc.)
- Click on Save Changes when finished …
Now, when visitors land on your website, they will see blog post entries displayed either on your home page or blog page, up to the maximum number of posts you have specified …
