As we’ve discussed in other posts, by default, WordPress treats your site as a ‘blog’ and shows your most recent blog posts on the home page, unless you specify a page as the front page.
In a previous post, we also discuss how to create a blog page to display your latest published entries.
Whether you choose to have posts on your front page or your blog page, WordPress lets you specify the number of blog post entries to show on these pages (i.e. ’2’, ‘3’, ‘9’ etc.)
Your WP website will then display blog post entries on your blog page up to the maximum number of items you have specified, even if your WordPress web site contains more posts than the number set to display …
Being able to set how many blog posts can display on your site has a number of practical uses.
For example, you can set your blog to display only the most recent blog post item you have published. This is handy, if, for example, you want to promote a weekly special, a ’book of the month’ type of offer, publish the latest results of your sports team, post an upcoming event, set up a quarterly community page for updates and announcements, etc.
You can also use this feature to fill an ugly space on your blog if your sidebar menu is too long …
Whatever the reason may be, With WordPress you have the flexibility to set the number of posts that you want to show on main blog page.
Let’s show you, then, how easy it is to set how many blog posts you want to display on your site’s blog page.
How To Set The Number Of Blog Post Entries Displayed On Your Blog Page
WordPress allows you to choose how many blog posts you would like listed on the blog page of your web site.
The number of posts you would like to display is completely up to you. WordPress doesn’t limit this number …
Note: We recommend that you choose a sensible setting that won’t slow down your page as the entries load on your site. You can always raise or lower the amount of items displayed on your blog page.
To specify how many blog post entries you would like to have showing on your blog page site, go to the WP admin menu and select Settings > Reading …
Configure the options in the Reading Settings panel as per the screenshot below:
How To Change The Number Of Posts On Your Front Page
If you are using your WP site as a blog (i.e. the default installation option), where the front page shows your most recent posts, then set your options as shown below:
- Front page displays: Set this to Your latest posts
- Blog pages show at most: X posts (where ‘X’ is the number of blog post entries you want showing – e.g. ‘1’, ’5’, ‘7’, ’15’ etc.)
- Click the ‘Save’ button when done…
Modifying The Number Of Posts Showing On The Blog Page
If you are using your WP site as a website, where the main page displays a fixed page and your latest published posts show up on a separate blog page, then edit your settings as described below:
- Front page displays: Set this to A static page, then select Posts page: > your Blog Page from the drop down menu
- Blog pages show at most: X posts X posts (where ‘X’ is the number of blog posts that you want showing – i.e. ‘1’, ‘3’, ’10’, ’12’ etc.)
- Click the Save Changes button when done …
Now, when visitors come to your site, they will see your blog posts displayed either on your front page or blog page, as per the settings you have specified …
