As we’ve discussed in other posts, in a default installation, WordPress treats your website as a ‘blog’ and displays your latest published posts on the home page, unless you set a specific page as the main page.
In a separate tutorial, we also discuss how to create a WordPress blog page to show your latest blog posts.
Whether you choose to make display your newest blog posts on your main page or your blog page, WordPress lets you specify the number of blog posts to show up on these pages (i.e. ‘1’, ‘3’, ’12’ etc.)
Your WP website will then display recently published post entries on your blog page up to the maximum number of posts you have set, even if your WP website contains more posts than the number you have set to display …
Having the ability to set the number of posts can display on your site is useful.
For example, you can display only the most recent post that you have published. This can be useful for example, if you are promoting a weekly special, a ‘deal of the day’ type of offer, publish the latest results of a local sports competition, post upcoming events, set up a weekly community page for updates and announcements, etc.
Or, you can use this feature to fill an ugly space on your blog if your sidebar menu runs too long …
Whatever the reason may be, With WordPress you have the flexibility to set the number of posts to display on main blog page.
Let’s show you, then, how easy it is to change the number of posts to display on your site’s blog page.
How To Set The Number Of Posts Displayed On Your WordPress Blog Page
WordPress lets you specify how many posts you would like to have displaying on the blog page of your web site.
How many blog posts you want to display is completely up to you. there is no limit to this number …
Note: Select a sensible setting that won’t slow down your page as the content loads on your site. You can always increase or decrease the amount of posts displayed.
To set how many published blog post entries you want to show on your blog page web site, select Settings > Reading from your WordPress admin menu …
Configure your options in the Reading Settings screen as shown below:
Modifying The Number Of Posts On Your Home Page
If you are using your site as a blog (i.e. the default installation option), where the main page displays your newest blog posts, then edit your settings as described below:
- Front page displays: Set this to Your latest posts
- Blog pages show at most: X posts (where ‘X’ is the number of post entries that you want to show – i.e. ‘1’, ’5’, ‘7’, ’12’ etc.)
- Click the ‘Save’ button when finished to update your settings…
To Change The Number Of Posts On Your Blog Page
If you are using your site as a website, where the home page displays a fixed page and your latest blog posts display on a separate blog page, then edit your settings as described below:
- Front page displays: Set this to A static page, then select Posts page: > your Blog Page from the drop down menu
- Blog pages show at most: X posts X posts (where ‘X’ is the number of blog posts you want showing – i.e. ‘1’, ‘3’, ‘7’, ’12’ etc.)
- Click the Save Changes button when done …
Now, when visitors land on your website, they will see your newest blog posts displayed either on your home page or blog page, as per the settings you have specified …
