As we’ve discussed in other posts, in a default installation, WordPress treats your website as a ‘blog’ and shows your newest posts on the home page, unless you specify a page as a static home page.
In a separate tutorial, we also address how to create a blog page to display your most recent blog post entries.
Regardless of your choice to have blog post entries on your home page or your blog page, you can set a specific number of blog post entries to show up on these pages (i.e. ’2’, ’5’, ‘9’ etc.)
Your WP website will then display your blog posts on your blog page up to the maximum number of items you have specified, even if your website contains more posts than the number of posts set to display …
Being able to specify how many blog posts display on your web site has a number of uses.
For example, you can display only the most recent post item that you have published. This can be useful, if, for example, you want to send your readers to a weekly special, a ’book of the month’ type of offer, publish the latest results of a local sports competition, post an upcoming event, set up a quarterly social page for announcements, etc.
Or, you can use this great feature to fill an empty space on your blog page if your sidebar menu runs too long …
Whatever the reason, With WordPress you have the flexibility to change the number of posts to display on your blog page.

How To Set The Number Of Post Entries Displayed On Your WordPress Blog
WordPress allows you to specify how many published blog post entries you want to have displaying on your blog page.
The number of posts you would like to display is entirely up to you. there is no limit to this amount …
Note: Select a sensible setting that won’t overload your page as the entries load on your site. You can always increase or decrease the amount of items displayed.
To set the number of blog post entries you want displayed on your site’s blog page site, choose Settings > Reading from your WP admin menu …
Configure the settings in the Reading Settings screen as per the screenshot below:
How To Edit The Number Of Posts On The Front Page
If you are using your site as a blog (i.e. the default installation option), where the home page shows your newest post entries, then edit your settings as shown below:
- Front page displays: Set this to Your latest posts
- Blog pages show at most: X posts (where ‘X’ is the number of blog posts that you want showing – e.g. ‘1’, ‘3’, ‘7’, ’15’ etc.)
- Click the ‘Save’ button when finished to update your settings…
Specifying The Number Of Posts Displayed On The Blog Page
If you are using your site as a website, where the main page displays a fixed page and your newest posts display on a separate blog page, then edit your settings as shown below:
- Front page displays: Set this to A static page, then select Posts page: > your Blog Page from the drop down menu
- Blog pages show at most: X posts X posts (where ‘X’ is the number of blog posts that you want displayed – i.e. ‘1’, ’5’, ’10’, ’15’ etc.)
- Click on Save Changes when done …
Now, when visitors come to your website, they will see blog post entries showing either on your front page or blog page, up to the maximum number of posts you have specified …
