As we’ve discussed in previous posts, by default, WordPress treats your website as a ‘blog’ and displays your newest post entries on the main page, unless you specify a page as a main page.
In a separate post, we also discussed how to create a blog page to show your most recent blog posts.
Regardless of your choice to have your most recent published articles on your home page or your blog page, you can specify the number of published blog post entries to show on these pages (e.g. ‘1’, ‘3’, ’12’ etc.)
Your WP website will then display blog post entries on your blog page up to the maximum number of blog posts you have specified, even if your website or blog contains more blog posts than the number of items you have set to display …
Having the ability to specify how many post items can display on your web site can be useful.
For example, you can set your blog to display only the most recent post you have published. This is handy, if, for example, you are promoting a weekly special, a ’book of the month’ type of offer, publish the latest results of your sports team, post an upcoming event, set up a monthly community page for updates and announcements, etc.
You can also use this great feature to fill an ugly space on your blog page if your sidebar menu is too long …
Whatever the reason may be, With WordPress you have the flexibility to change the number of posts that you want to show on main blog page.
Let’s show you, then, how easy it is to change how many blog posts you want to show on your site’s blog page.
How To Specify The Number Of Posts Displayed On Your WordPress Blog Page
WordPress allows you to choose how many published blog post entries you want to have showing on the blog page of your web site.
The number of blog posts you would like to display is entirely up to you. there is no limit to this number …
Note: We suggest that you select a sensible setting that won’t overload your page as the content loads on your site. You can always increase or decrease the number of posts displayed on your blog page.
To specify how many published blog post entries you want to show on your site’s blog page site, go to your WordPress dashboard menu and select Settings > Reading …
Configure your settings in the Reading Settings page as shown below:
How To Edit The Number Of Posts On The Front Page
If you are using your site as a blog (i.e. the default WordPress option), where the front page shows your newest blog posts, then edit your settings as described below:
- Front page displays: Set this to Your latest posts
- Blog pages show at most: X posts (where ‘X’ is the number of blog posts you want to display – i.e. ‘1’, ’5’, ‘7’, ’12’ etc.)
- Click the Save Changes button when finished…
Modifying The Number Of Posts Displayed On Your Blog Page
If you are using your site as a website, where the main page is a fixed page and your latest post entries display on a separate blog page, then set your options as shown below:
- Front page displays: Set this to A static page, then select Posts page: > your Blog Page from the drop down menu
- Blog pages show at most: X posts X posts (where ‘X’ is the number of posts you want showing – i.e. ‘1’, ‘3’, ’10’, ’12’ etc.)
- Click on Save Changes when done …
Now, when visitors come to your site, they will see your latest blog posts displayed either on your main page or blog page, as per the settings you have specified …
