As we’ve discussed in previous posts, in a default installation, WordPress treats your site as a ‘blog’ and shows your newest post entries on the front page, unless you fix a page as your home page.

Whether you choose to make blog post entries on your home page or your blog page, With WordPress you can specify the number of blog post entries to display on these pages (i.e. ‘1’, ’6’, ’15’ etc.)
Your site will then display posts on your blog page up to the maximum number of blog post entries you have specified, even if your website contains more blog posts than the number of items set to display …
Being able to specify how many blog posts display on your web site has a number of uses.
For example, you can set your blog to display only the latest entry you have published. This can be handy for example, if you want to send your readers to a weekly special, a ‘deal of the day’ type of offer, publish the latest results of a local sports competition, post upcoming events, set up a quarterly office page for updates and announcements, etc.
You can also use this feature to fill an empty space on your blog if your sidebar menu is too long …
Whatever the reason, WordPress gives you the flexibility to change the number of posts that you want to show on your blog page.
Let’s show you, then, how easy it is to specify how many blog post entries to show up on your WordPress blog.
How To Set The Number Of Posts Displayed On Your Blog Page
WordPress lets you choose how many blog post entries you want to have showing on the blog page of your web site.
The number of posts you would like displayed is entirely up to you. WordPress doesn’t limit this amount …
Note: Choose a sensible setting that won’t overload your page as the content loads on your site. You can always increase or decrease the amount of items displayed on your blog page.
To specify how many published blog post entries you would like displayed on your blog page web site, go to your WP dashboard menu and choose Settings > Reading …
Configure your settings in the Reading Settings screen as per the screenshot below:
Editing The Number Of Posts Displayed On The Main Page
If you are using your site as a blog (i.e. the default WordPress option), where the home page displays your most recent published post items, then edit your settings as shown below:
- Front page displays: Set this to Your latest posts
- Blog pages show at most: X posts (where ‘X’ is the number of post entries that you want showing – i.e. ‘1’, ‘3’, ’10’, ’12’ etc.)
- Click the Save Changes button when finished…
Editing The Number Of Posts Displayed On Your Blog Page
If you are using your WordPress site as a website, where the main page is a fixed page and your newest blog posts display on a separate blog page, then edit your settings as described below:
- Front page displays: Set this to A static page, then select Posts page: > your Blog Page from the drop down menu
- Blog pages show at most: X posts X posts (where ‘X’ is the number of post entries you want to display – e.g. ‘1’, ’5’, ’10’, ’15’ etc.)
- Click the Save Changes button when done to update your settings …
Now, when visitors land on your website, they will see blog post entries displayed either on your main page or blog page, as per the settings you have specified …
