As we’ve discussed in other posts, in a default installation, WordPress treats your website as a ‘blog’ and displays your newest post entries on the front page, unless you set a fixed page as a home page.
In a previous post, we also discuss how to create a blog page to show your latest blog posts.
Whether you choose to have your blog posts on your main page or your blog page, WordPress lets you specify the number of posts to display on these pages (e.g. ’2’, ‘3’, ’15’ etc.)
Your WordPress website will then display your blog posts on your blog page up to the maximum number of posts you have specified, even if your website contains more posts than the number of items set to display …
Having the ability to set how many entries can display on your WordPress site has a number of uses.
For example, you can display only the most recent blog post item you have published. This is useful for example, if you promote a weekly special, a ’book of the month’ type of offer, publish the latest results of your sports team, post an upcoming event, set up a quarterly team page for updates and announcements, etc.
Or, you can use this feature to fill an ugly space on your blog if your sidebar menu runs too long …
Whatever the reason, WordPress gives you the flexibility to change the number of posts that you want to display on your blog page.
Let’s show you, then, how to easily specify how many blog posts you want to show on your blog page.
How To Specify The Number Of Posts Displayed On Your WordPress Blog
WordPress allows you to choose how many blog post entries you would like to show on the blog page of your website.
The number of blog posts you want displayed is completely up to you. there is no limit to this number …
Note: Choose a sensible setting that won’t slow down your page as the content loads on your site. You can always increase or decrease the amount of items displayed on your blog page.
To specify how many posts you want to have displaying on your website’s blog page site, go to the WordPress dashboard menu and select Settings > Reading …
Configure your settings in the Reading Settings screen as shown in the screenshot below:
How To Edit The Number Of Posts Displayed On Your Front Page
If you are using your WP site as a blog (i.e. the default installation option), where the main page displays your most recent post entries, then set your options as shown below:
- Front page displays: Set this to Your latest posts
- Blog pages show at most: X posts (where ‘X’ is the number of blog post items that you want to show – i.e. ‘1’, ‘3’, ‘7’, ’15’ etc.)
- Click the Save Changes button when done…
Editing The Number Of Posts On Your Blog Page
If you are using your WordPress site as a website, where the main page shows a fixed page and your newest post entries display on a separate blog page, then set your options as shown below:
- Front page displays: Set this to A static page, then select Posts page: > your Blog Page from the drop down menu
- Blog pages show at most: X posts X posts (where ‘X’ is the number of blog post items that you want to display – i.e. ‘1’, ’5’, ’10’, ’12’ etc.)
- Click the Save Changes button when done to update your settings …
Now, when visitors come to your website, they will see your latest blog posts displayed either on your front page or blog page, up to the maximum number of posts you have specified …
