In this tutorial, you will learn how to install, activate and configure a WordPress plugin called Simple Staff List.

Simple Staff List is a free plugin that lets you easily display basic information to visitors about your staff on your site.

First, let’s install and activate the plugin.

Log into your dashboard and navigate to Plugins > Add New

In the Plugins area, search for “simple staff plugin”. This brings up the Simple Staff Plugin in your search results area.

After your plugin has been installed and activated, you will notice that new entry will have been added to your WordPress menu section called Staff Members

This menu is where you will configure and manage all of the options and settings for the Simple Staff List plugin are configured and managed in the Staff Members menu.

Configuring The Plugin

Depending on how many people are in your organization and how you want to structure your directory, you could just start adding new entries after installing the plugin, or create different groups (i.e. categories) that you will assign to individual group members.

Let’s start by configuring your directory groups. In your dashboard menu, select Staff Members > Groups

Add a new group by entering the following information:

  1. Group Name – Enter your group name here
  2. Slug – Type in the URL-friendly version of your group name. Note: make sure that all letters are in lower case and use hyphens instead of spaces.
  3. Parent – Use this drop-down menu if you plan to set up a directory hierarchy
  4. Description – Type in your category description here (optional)
  5. Click Add New Group when finished to create a new group …

After you have finished setting up your hierarchical structure, you can begin to add names to your directory.

This page provides an easy-to-use interface for adding your staff member information and includes the following fields:

Name Section (1)

  • Name: The staff member’s name
  • Slug: Modify the slug for each employee if you want (this section appears after saving your details).

Staff Photo Section (2)

  • Photo: Upload a photo here

Staff Member Info Section (3)

  • Position: Add the employee’s role
  • Email: The staff member’s email
  • Phone Number: Type in the person’s phone number
  • Facebook URL: Type in the person’s Facebook address (note: use the full URL, e.g. http://www.facebook.com/username)
  • Twitter URL: Add your staff member’s Twitter username here (note: only enter the username, not the full twitter URL)

  • Staff Member Bio: Type in a profile description for your employees here. As this uses the WordPress Text Editor, you can add formatting to the content entered in this section.

  • Groups: Assign your staff member to a specific group (see the previous section to learn how to set up your groups).

Click on Edit to edit the item’s Staff Bio, or Quick Edit to change details like name, slug, group, and publish status. You can also remove a member from your employee directory by clicking on Trash, or view the entry on your site by clicking View

For example, a useful shortcode variation you can decide to use to display only members belonging a specific group is the shortcode [simple-staff-list group=”group name”], (e.g.:[simple-staff-list group=”customer representatives”])

You can also display listings in ascending or descending order by using the shortcode [simple-staff-list order=”DESC”] (descending).
