WordPress Plugin Tutorial: Adding An Employee Directory
In this tutorial, we will install, activate and configure a free plugin called Simple Staff List.
Simple Staff List – WordPress Plugin

The Simple Staff List plugin is a no cost WordPress plugin that lets you employee.
First, let’s install and activate the plugin.
Log into your administration and from the admin menu, choose Plugins > Add New …

In the Plugins panel, search for “simple staff plugin”. This will bring up the Simple Staff Plugin in your search results area.
Click on Install Now …

After installing and activating the plugin, you will see that a new menu will have been added to the WordPress menu bar called Staff Members …

All of the settings for this plugin are configured and managed in this menu.
Configuring The Plugin
Depending on how many people are in your organization and how you want to structure your employee directory, you could start to add new staff details after installing the plugin, or create several groups (i.e. categories) to assign yourmembers into.
Staff Members – Groups
To set up your categories go to your WP dashboard menu and choose Staff Members > Groups …

Add new groups by entering the following information:
- Group Name – Enter your category name here
- Slug – Type in the slug of your group category name. Note: make sure that all letters are in lower case and use hyphens instead of spaces.
- Parent – This section lets you set up nested groups
- Description – Enter a category description in this field (optional)
- Click the Add New Group button when done to create the new group …

Create as many groups and nested groups as you need by adding new Groups and then using the Parent drop-down menu to organize these into a hierarchical structure …

After you are done setting up your hierarchical structure, you can start to add names to your directory.

From your WordPress admin menu, choose Staff Members > Add New …

This page provides an easy-to-use interface for adding your staff member details and includes the following fields:
Name Section (1)
- Name: Enter your employee’s name
- Permalink: Modify each staff members’ slug (this section appears after saving your details).
Staff Photo Section (2)
- Photo: Upload a photo in this section
Staff Member Info Section (3)
- Position: Your staff member’s role
- Email: Type your staff member’s email
- Phone Number: The employee’s phone number
- Facebook URL: Add your company’s Facebook URL (note: use the full URL, e.g. http://www.facebook.com/username)
- Twitter URL: Enter your staff member’s Twitter username (note: only enter the username, not the full twitter URL)

- Staff Member Bio: Type in a profile description for your staff or team member here. Since this uses the WordPress Text Editor, you can use HTML in this section.
Groups Section (5)
- Groups: This section lets you assign the individual to a specific group (see the previous section to learn how to set up your groups).

As well as being able to customize your listing templates, the Simple Staff List plugin allows you to display your listings differently using modified shortcodes.
In your dashboard menu, click on Staff Members >Usage …

A useful variation you can add to your page, for example, to display only members belonging a specific group is the shortcode [simple-staff-list group=”group name”], (e.g.:[simple-staff-list group=”technical engineers”])
You can also display listings in ascending or descending order by using the shortcode [simple-staff-list order=”ASC”] (ascending).
