This tutorial explains how to create an easy-to-manage staff directory in WordPress.
Tutorial: Adding A Staff Directory
In this tutorial, we will install, activate and configure a no cost WordPress plugin called Simple Staff List.
Simple Staff List

Simple Staff List lets you easily build a basic staff directory list for.
The first step is to install and activate this plugin.
Log into the dashboard and navigate to Plugins > Add New …

In the Plugins screen, search for “simple staff plugin”. This will bring up the Simple Staff Plugin in your plugin search results.
Click on Install Now …

Activate the plugin …

After your plugin has been installed and activated, you will notice that new menu will display on the main WP menu called Staff Members …

The Staff Members menu is where you will configure and manage all of the settings and options for this plugin are configured and managed in this menu.
Configuring Simple Staff List
Depending on the size of your business and how you want to structure your directory, you could just start adding new entries after installing the plugin, or create various groups (i.e. categories) that you will assign to individual members.
Staff Members – Groups
Let’s start by setting up your groups. From your dashboard menu, select Staff Members > Groups …

Note: Adding groups works in the same way as adding categories in WordPress …

Create new groups by entering the following information:
- Group Name – Enter your group name here
- Slug – Enter the slug of your category name. Note: make sure that all letters are in lower case and use hyphens instead of spaces.
- Parent – This section lets you set up nested groups
- Description – Enter your category description (optional)
- Click the Add New Group button when finished to set up the new group name …

If you run a larger organization, having the ability to assign people to different categories can be very useful. For example, you can create a group for founders, project teams, faculties, etc.
Create as many groups and nested categories as you need by adding new Groups and then using the Parent drop-down menu to assign these to a hierarchical structure …

To change or reassign Groups for an item, hover your mouse button over a category title and select the Edit link …
The group will display in the Edit Group page. Select a new parent category from the Parent drop-down menu …

To change the Group name or slug, hover your mouse over the group name and choose the Quick Edit menu feature …

Add as many group names as you need to until you are done creating your directory structure …
You can add as many nested groups as you like …

After you are done setting up your groups, you can begin to add names to your directory.
Staff Members – Add New
From your WP admin menu, click on Staff Members > Add New …

This brings you to the Add New Staff Member screen …

This section provides an easy-to-use interface for adding your staff member information and includes the following fields:
Name Section (1)
- Name: Your staff member’s name
- Permalink: Edit the slug for each employee if you want (this section appears after your first save).
Staff Photo Section (2)
- Photo: Upload a photo in this section
Staff Member Info Section (3)
- Position: Your staff member’s position
- Email: The employee’s email
- Phone Number: Type the employee’s phone number
- Facebook URL: Type in your company’s Facebook address (note: use the full URL, e.g. http://www.facebook.com/username)
- Twitter URL: Type in the person’s Twitter username (note: only enter the username, not the full twitter URL)
Staff Member Bio Section (4)
- Staff Member Bio: Add a profile description for your staff member here. As this uses the default WordPress Text Editor, you can add formatted content in this section.
Groups Section (5)
- Groups: You can assign your employee to a specific group (see above to learn how to set up your groups).

After you have entered details, assign your new item to a directory group in the Groups section located in your sidebar …

Note: If you did not set up categories before starting to add staff member details, you can create a group now by clicking on Groups > + Add New Group …

A field for entering your new group name will appear, with a drop-down menu to assign your new entry to a parent group. Enter your new directory category and click on Add New Group …
Your new group will be created. Remember to tick the checkbox to assign an individual to the group …

Note: Groups cannot be edited when adding or editing an employee’s details. To edit a group entry, go to the Groups section of the plugin’s settings (see “Groups” section above for details).

Click on Edit to modify the item’s Staff Bio, or Quick Edit to edit details such as their name, slug, group, and publish status. You can also remove an entry from the directory by clicking on Trash, or view the entry on your site by clicking View …

For example, a useful variation you can select to display a list of employees belonging only to a specific group is the shortcode [simple-staff-list group=”group name”], (e.g.:[simple-staff-list group=”property managers”])
Or, you can make your listings display in ascending or descending order by using the shortcode [simple-staff-list order=”DESC”] (descending).
