In this tutorial, we show you how to easily add a simple and easily updatable simple team members directory to your WordPress site using a free plugin.
Adding An Employee Directory To WordPress
In this tutorial, we will install, activate and configure a no cost WordPress plugin called Simple Staff List.

Simple Staff List is free and lets you create a basic staff directory list for.
The first step is to install and activate this plugin.
Log into your administration and navigate to Plugins > Add New …

In the Plugins area, search for “simple staff plugin”. This brings up the Simple Staff Plugin in your search results area.
Click on Install Now …

After installing and activating your plugin, you will notice that new menu will appear in the WordPress admin menu section called Staff Members …

All of the settings and options for this plugin are configured and managed in this menu.
Plugin Configuration
Depending on the size of your business and how you want to structure your employee directory, you could just begin adding new staff entries after installing the plugin, or create various groups (i.e. categories) to assign yourstaff members into.
Staff Members – Groups
Let’s start by setting up your directory groups. From your dashboard menu, select Staff Members > Groups …

Note: Setting up groups works in the same way as configuring categories …

Create a new group by typing in the following information:
- Group Name – Enter your group name here
- Slug – Type in the slug of your category. Note: make sure that all letters are in lower case and use hyphens instead of spaces.
- Parent – Use this section to set up nested categories
- Description – Type in your category description here (optional)
- Click Add New Group when done to create a new group name …

If you manage a business that employs many people, having the ability to set up different groups can be very useful. For example, you can create categories for investors, developers, faculties, etc.
Create as many groups and nested groups as you need by adding new Groups and then using the Parent drop-down menu to assign these to a hierarchical structure …

To change or reassign Groups for a specific item, hover your mouse over a category title and click on the Edit link …

The category details will display in the Edit Group screen. Select a new parent category from the Parent drop-down menu …

To edit the Group name or slug, hover your mouse over the group name and click on Quick Edit …

Continue adding groups to this section until you are done creating your directory structure …

You can add as many nested categories as you like …

Once you have finished setting up your groups, the next step is to begin adding names to your directory.
Staff Members – Add New
In your WP admin menu, choose Staff Members > Add New …

This brings you to the Add New Staff Member area …

This section provides you with an easy-to-use interface for adding your staff member profile and includes the following fields:
Name Section (1)
- Name: Your employee’s name
- Permalink: Here you can change the permalink URL for each employee if required (you will see this section after your first save).
Staff Photo Section (2)
- Photo: Upload a photo in this section
Staff Member Info Section (3)
- Position: Type the person’s role
- Email: The employee’s email address
- Phone Number: Type in your staff member’s phone number
- Facebook URL: Add the staff member’s Facebook address (note: use the full URL, e.g. http://www.facebook.com/username)
- Twitter URL: Type in your company’s Twitter username (note: only enter the username, not the full twitter URL)

- Staff Member Bio: Enter a profile description for your staff member here. This uses the WordPress Text Editor, so you can add formatting to the content entered into this section.

- Groups: You can assign the individual to a specific group (see the previous section of this tutorial to learn how to set up your groups).

Now that you know what each section does, enter each of your employee’s details …

Once you have finished inputting your staff member’s details, assign the new entry to a directory group in the Groups feature in your sidebar …

Note: If you have not set up categories before adding new staff members, you can create a new group by clicking on Groups > + Add New Group …

A field for entering a group name will display, with a dropdown menu that lets you assign your new entry to a parent group. Type in the name of your new group and click on Add New Group …

The new group will be added. Remember to tick the checkbox to assign an entry to the group …

Note: You cannot edit groups when adding or making changes to new employee details. To edit an item, go to the Groups section of the plugin’s settings (see “Groups” section above for details).

If you need to edit individual entries, simply hover over their name, and a menu will appear.
Click on Edit if you want to update their Staff Bio, or Quick Edit to change details like name, slug, group, and publish status. You can also remove an entry from your employee directory by clicking on Trash, or view the entry on your site by selecting View …

In addition to being able to customize your listing templates, the Simple Staff List plugin lets you display your listings differently using modified shortcodes.

A useful variation you can add to your page, for example, to display only members belonging a specific group is the shortcode [simple-staff-list group=”group name”], (e.g.:[simple-staff-list group=”customer representatives”])
Or, you can display listings in ascending or descending order by using the shortcode [simple-staff-list order=”ASC”] (ascending).
