How To Add An Employee List Directory
In this tutorial, we will install, activate and configure a free WordPress plugin called Simple Staff List.
Simple Staff List

The Simple Staff List plugin is free and lets you easily staff.
The first step is to install and activate the Simple Staff List plugin.
Log into the WordPress dashboard and go to Plugins > Add New …

In the Plugins screen, search for “simple staff plugin”. This brings up the Simple Staff Plugin in your search results area.
Click on Install Now …

Activate the plugin …

After the plugin has been installed and activated, a new menu will be added to your main WP menu called Staff Members …

This menu is where you will manage and configure all of the options and settings for your plugin are configured and managed from the Staff Members menu.
Configuring The Plugin
Depending on the size of your business and how you want to structure your directory, you could just start to add new staff members at this point, or create various groups (i.e. categories) to assign your individualemployees into.

To set up your directory groups go to your dashboard menu and select Staff Members > Groups …

Note: Adding directory groups works in the same way as adding WordPress categories …

Create new groups by entering the following information:
- Group Name – Type in your group category name
- Slug – Enter the slug of your group. Note: make sure that all letters are in lower case and use hyphens instead of spaces.
- Parent – Use this section if you plan to set up nested categories
- Description – Enter a group description in this field (optional)
- Click the Add New Group button when finished to set up a new directory category …

If you are a business that employs many people, being able to set up different groups can be very useful. For example, you can create categories for founders, developers, faculties, etc.
Create as many groups and nested groups as you need by adding new Groups and then using the Parent drop-down menu to organize these into a directory hierarchy …

To change Groups for a particular entry, hover your mouse over a category title and click on the Edit link …

Your selected item will open in the Edit Group page. Select a new category from the Parent dropdown menu …

To edit the Group name or slug, hover over the group name and select the Quick Edit menu feature …

Click Update Group to save your changes …

Continue adding groups to this section until you are done creating your directory structure …

Once you are done setting up your groups, the next step is to start to add your people to your directory.
Staff Members – Add New
From your WP admin menu, click on Staff Members > Add New …

This opens up the Add New Staff Member section in your browser …

This screen provides an easy-to-use interface for adding and editing your staff member information and includes the following fields:
Name Section (1)
- Name: Your employee’s name
- Slug: Modify each staff members’ slug (you will see this section after your first save).
Staff Photo Section (2)
- Photo: Add a photo of your staff member
Staff Member Info Section (3)
- Position: Type the person’s position
- Email: Type in the staff member’s email address into this field
- Phone Number: Type in the person’s phone number into this field
- Facebook URL: Add the person’s Facebook address here (note: use the full URL, e.g. http://www.facebook.com/username)
- Twitter URL: Enter your employee’s Twitter username into this field (note: only enter the username, not the full twitter URL)
Staff Member Bio Section (4)
- Staff Member Bio: Type a profile description for your employees here. This uses the WordPress Text Editor, so you can format content in this section.
Groups Section (5)
- Groups: Assign an employee or team member to a group (see above to learn how to set up your groups).

Now that you know what each section does, enter each of your employee’s details …

Once you have finished entering your staff member’s details, assign your entry to a directory group in the Groups section in the sidebar …

Note: If you have not set up categories before starting to add new staff members, you can create a new group by clicking on Groups > + Add New Group …

A field for entering your new group name will display, with a drop-down menu that lets you assign your new entry to a parent group. Type in the name of your new category and click on the Add New Group button …

The new group will be added. Remember to tick the check box to assign a person to the group …

Note: You cannot edit groups when adding or editing a staff member’s details. To edit a group entry, go to the Groups section of the plugin’s settings (see “Groups” section above for details).

If you need to edit individual details, just hover your mouse over their list name, and a submenu will appear.
Click on Edit to update their Staff Bio, or Quick Edit to change details like name, slug, group, and publish status. You can also remove an entry from your employee directory by clicking on the Trash link, or view the entry on your site by selecting View …

In addition to allowing you to customize your listing templates, the Simple Staff List plugin allows you to display your staff profiles differently using modified shortcodes.
In your main menu, choose Staff Members >Usage …

A useful variation you can choose, for example, to display only members of a specific group is the shortcode [simple-staff-list group=”group name”], (e.g.:[simple-staff-list group=”Gold Level associates”])
Or, you can make your listings display in ascending or descending order by adding the shortcode [simple-staff-list order=”DESC”] (descending).
